Club History
Founded in 1975
Dingwall Amateur Swimming Club was founded on Friday 1st August 1975, following a public meeting held at the Sports Centre in Dingwall. At this meeting, the report of a previously appointed Steering Committee was presented, and it was unanimously agreed to formally establish the club. The first rules and conditions governing the club were approved on the same evening.
The formation of the club marked a significant moment for the local community, creating structured opportunities for swimmers in Dingwall and the surrounding area to train and compete as part of an organised club.
Founders and First Committee
The club was established through the dedication of local volunteers and community figures who recognised the importance of accessible, well-organised swimming opportunities.
The first office bearers appointed in 1975 were:
- President: Mr J. D. Martin, M.B.E.
- Vice-President: Mr J Arrol, O.B.E.
- Secretary: Mrs N Morris
- Treasurer: Inspector D Smith, B.E.M.
They were supported by the inaugural committee members:
- Mrs C. MacTavish
- Mr G MacLeod
- Mr R. D. Singleton
Junior representation was included from the outset, with H. Smith and A. Smith appointed as junior members. The committee was further supported by ex officio members T. Strang, Centre Manager, and I. Ferguson, Bathsmaster.
The Early Days
Following the club’s formation, the first meeting of the newly appointed committee took place on Friday 12th September 1975, with arrangements confirmed for the club’s opening session later that evening at 8.00pm.
Early decisions reflected a strong emphasis on organisation, fairness, and community involvement. Membership enrolment was carefully managed, finances were formally structured, and close cooperation with local officials ensured the club began on a stable footing.
Growth and Continuity
From its earliest days, Dingwall ASC has been shaped by the commitment of swimmers, coaches, volunteers, and families. Across the decades, the club has continued to evolve, supported by dedicated coaching teams who helped develop swimmers, maintain standards, and build a positive club culture.
The contribution of past coaches has played an important role in shaping the club and supporting generations of swimmers through their development.
The Club Today
The Club Today
In 2013, Dingwall Amateur Swimming Club entered a new phase under the leadership of Andrew Clark, who took on the role of Head Coach. Building on the foundations laid by previous coaching teams, the club’s focus shifted toward strengthening long-term swimmer development, raising technical standards, and creating a positive, inclusive training environment.
Today, the club is led by a committed coaching team supporting swimmers across all stages of the pathway. Alongside the Head Coach, Emily Finlayson plays a key role within the senior coaching structure, with Iona Murphy and Grace Ewing supporting the development of swimmers through the club’s pathway.
Together, the coaching team continues to develop a programme that values progression, consistency, and enjoyment, while remaining true to the club’s roots and community values.
